International Day Of Persons With Disabilities

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its Optional Protocol (CRPD, 2006, A/RES/61/106) defines persons with disabilities to “include those who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which in interaction with various barriers may hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others”.

      Goals Of The International Day of Persons with Disabilities:

      The International Day of Persons with Disabilities was announced officially in the year 1992 by UN resolutions 47/3 and is observed internationally on 3rd December.  Some of the purposes of this day are to

      • Increase awareness about the Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
      • Promote the rights of Person with Disabilities (PWDs).
      • Promote the well- being of Person with Disabilities (PWDs).
      • Promote the integration of PWDs in different segments of life.
      • Mobilize support for PWDs.
      • Increase understanding regarding PWDs their issues.
      Disable population

      WHO’s Report on Disability mentioned that out of the total world’s population, approximately 15% are persons with disability PWD. Out of this percentage, many people are living with such a disability not apparent immediately. COVID-19 also badly affected and increased the challenges for the Persons with disabilities.

      Focus Of 2020 Theme of “International Day of Persons with Disabilities”:

      Spread the awareness about disabilities which are not apparently visible immediately.

      These disabilities include

      • Neurological disorders
      • Learning differences
      • Cognitive dysfunctions
      • Choronic pain
      • Mental illness
      • Vision impairment
      • Hearing impairment
      • Diabetes
      • Brain injuries

      The day also focuses on the disability as part of the human condition and believes that everyone is affected with impairment at some stage of life.  It requires commitment, resources and manpower to respond to such persons.
