World Down Syndrome Day

The United Nations General Assembly announced to observe 21 March as World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) via resolution A/RES/66/149 on December 2011. The date itself relates to triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome.

    Purpose Of World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD):

    Please note that the Down syndrome and Down’s syndrome can be used interchangeably. The purpose is to empower the individuals having Down Syndrome with

    • Awareness
    • Health care support
    • Counselling
    • Educational guidance
      What Is Down Syndrome

      What Is Down Syndrome:

      Down Syndrome is a condition in which an individual has an extra copy of Chromosome 21. The cause is still unknown but it exists across the world. The result is the effect on physical characteristics and learning of the individual. 

      Every year the population of Down Syndrome increases approximately by 3000-5000 children

      2020 World Down Syndrome Day Theme:

      The theme for the 2020 WDSD is “We Decide”.
      This focuses on the commitment to provide effective participation in making the decision regarding the matters relating to their lives.

      What They Need:

      The life quality of Down Syndrome individuals can be met or improved by

      • Regular checkups for the physical and mental condition
      • Physiotherapy
      • Occupational therapy
      • Speech Therapy
      • Counselling
      • Special Education
      • Parental care
      • Medical guidance

      Activities On World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD):

      On 21st March i.e. World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), the people affected by the Down syndrome and others who are working with these individuals participate in different activities. The purpose of which is to increase the understanding and awareness about Down’s Syndrome and promoting the rights for their health and inclusion in society. The day also celebrates the accomplishments of individuals with Down’s syndrome which surely encourages them.

          What facilities can authorities provide for down syndrome children on that special day?

            Thank you for your comment.
            If you are referring to the Government, we are not aware of any such facilities provided by the government on that special day other than different programs and seminars. We have not found speciality schools either to cater for their needs. However, in the private sector, there are some organizations and special education centres that provide support to these kids.
